Youth Open Sessions

UAPS offers members the opportunity to get their kids into kayaks during our drop in kids open sessions at Eastglen Pool. These sessions are self-directed with no formal instruction, and guardians must be present to help their kids in the pool.

These sessions are designed to get children into boats, and comfortable with basic paddling. Please note their is no playboating allowed; we welcome more advanced kids to join at our regular weekly drop-in open sessions with a guardian instead.

For more information about youth sessions, please contact the Youth Director.

YOUTH PROGRAMMING

Our Youth Paddling Progression Program (YouthAPS) is designed for young paddlers who are ready to develop their skills and build a strong foundation for continued progression in whitewater paddling.

Using the FUNdamentals from the Canoe Kayak Canada Passports to Paddlesports, participants will work through a progressive set of paddling skills, challenges, and activities. Sessions will use games and skill-based activities to develop boat control, paddle skills, balance, coordination, movement, and confidence on the water.

The focus is on building sport-specific physical literacy and developing capable, confident paddlers. Rather than simply learning individual skills, paddlers will be encouraged to apply those skills in different situations, solve movement challenges, and progressively take on more complex tasks as their abilities develop.

This program is a great foundation for young paddlers who want to continue progressing in kayaking and explore where paddling can take them — from recreational whitewater to future development programs and competitive disciplines.

Geared towards ages 8–12 (Younger paddlers who are particularly keen, older siblings who would like to be part of the program, or any other unique situation are welcome to email us at youth@paddleuaps.com to discuss whether the program is a good fit).
